The TFR: Know It Before You Go

The FAA will enforce a Temporary Flight Restriction on every match day at MetLife Stadium. That means all aircraft are prohibited within a 3-nautical-mile radius up to 3,000 feet AGL around the stadium during game time.

Match days at MetLife are: June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, 30, July 5, and July 19 (the Final). Each one carries the same airspace restrictions. Check tfr.faa.gov and review current NOTAMs before every single one of these flights, not just the Final.

TFRs for major events like this are not suggestions. Busting one can mean certificate action, a phone call from a federal agent, or both.

Flight Plans Are Mandatory

The FAA requires pilots to file flight plans at least 6 hours but no more than 24 hours before departure during these high-traffic event windows. This isn't just about the TFR itself. The FAA has implemented Traffic Management Initiatives (TMI) across the region to handle the spike in demand across New York's already congested airspace.

File early. Expect delays. If you're flying IFR into Teterboro or any nearby airport, factor in potential ground stops or miles-in-trail restrictions. The New York TRACON handles some of the busiest airspace in the world on a normal day. July 19 will not be a normal day.

Which Airport Should You Use?

Teterboro Airport (TEB) is the closest general aviation option to MetLife, sitting roughly 3 miles from the stadium. It's the obvious choice, but that's exactly why it will be saturated. Call the FBO well in advance. Ramp space, parking, and crew cars will go fast.

Essex County Airport (CDW) and Morristown Airport (MMU) are solid alternatives if TEB is slammed. Both are within reasonable driving distance of the stadium and may offer a less congested arrival experience.

Whatever airport you choose, verify hours, FBO availability, and any airport-specific NOTAMs. Some FBOs require reservations for major events and may charge premium fees.

Other Restricted Areas in the Region

The airspace complexity around this event extends well beyond MetLife. Several fan event venues across the metro area carry their own airspace restrictions during the tournament window:

  • Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison, NJ (June 13 through July 19): 1 NM radius, 1,000 feet AGL drone restriction
  • Rockefeller Center, New York City (July 4 through July 19)
  • Louis Armstrong Stadium, Flushing, NY (June 11 through June 27)
  • Emily Warren Roebling Plaza, Brooklyn, NY (June 13 through June 19)

Know where you are relative to all of these, especially if you're transiting the area on a non-match day and assume the airspace is clean.

A Note on Drones: Leave It at Home

This article is aimed at pilots flying manned aircraft, but if you were thinking about bringing a drone to document the trip, stop. The same 3 NM / 3,000 foot AGL restriction that applies to aircraft applies to drones on match days.

The FAA will be using the DETER program to actively enforce violations. Civil penalties can reach $75,000. Criminal penalties can reach $100,000. Use the B4UFLY app to check restrictions before any drone flight in the area, and understand that around MetLife during match days, the answer is simply no.

If you're a drone operator looking for drone insurance, SkyWatch has options, but no policy covers intentional airspace violations.

Make Sure Your Coverage Is Current

Flying into a high-demand event in one of the most complex airspace environments in the country means the stakes are higher than a routine cross-country. Ramp congestion, fatigued pilots, busy controllers, and unfamiliar airports are a combination that warrants having your coverage squared away before you go.

If you own your aircraft, confirm your aviation insurance policy is active and covers the airports you're planning to use. If you're renting, make sure you have aircraft renters insurance in place. SkyWatch offers on-demand coverage for both owners and renters, so you're not locked into an annual commitment you don't need.

Quick Pre-Flight Checklist for July 19

  • Check tfr.faa.gov the day before and the morning of
  • Review all applicable NOTAMs for your route and destination
  • File your flight plan no earlier than 24 hours and no later than 6 hours before departure
  • Confirm FBO availability and parking at your destination airport
  • Have a backup airport in mind if TEB is unavailable
  • Verify your insurance coverage is current and adequate

The World Cup Final is a once-in-a-generation event. Fly smart, plan ahead, and make sure your paperwork, your aircraft, and your coverage are all ready before you push the throttle forward.
