Flight school owners often hear the same question from students and instructors: why does my non-owned premium look different from my classmate's? Non-owned rates are not a flat price. They reflect the pilot, the aircraft and the coverage chosen. Understanding those inputs helps your school set sensible requirements and helps pilots avoid overpaying.

The pilot

Underwriters look at who is flying. Certificate level, total flight time, time in make and model, and recent experience all matter. A student pilot and a seasoned CFI will not be rated the same, even on the same aircraft.

The aircraft

The make, model and value of the aircraft drive the hull portion of the premium. A simple trainer is a different exposure from a complex or high-performance aircraft. The higher the hull limit requested, the more the premium reflects it.

The limits

Each coverage part is priced on the limit selected:

  • Hull (liability for damage to the non-owned aircraft): from $5K to $200K on monthly and annual policies.
  • Liability: from $250K per accident and $25K per passenger up to $1M per accident and $200K per passenger.
  • Medical expense: up to $10K.
  • Deductible reimbursement: up to $25K.

The policy term

Because SkyWatch offers on-demand policies by the day, week, month or year, the term is part of the price. A pilot who flies for two weeks pays for two weeks, not a full year. Short-term plans have a maximum hull limit of $75K.

How flight schools can help

  • Publish clear minimum hull and liability requirements, so pilots do not guess.
  • Point students to a short-term option when they only need a training block.
  • Encourage CFIs who fly most weeks to compare monthly and annual terms.
  • Ask for a custom SkyWatch portal that shows only options meeting your thresholds.

Checklist before getting a quote

  • Total hours, certificate and recent flight time
  • Aircraft make, model and approximate value
  • Your school's required hull and liability limits
  • How long the pilot will actually fly
