Flight schools rarely have one kind of customer. A first-day discovery flight student, a part-time private pilot, a CFI picking up extra hours and a commercial student on a full-time track all rent school aircraft, and each of them needs coverage that fits how often they fly. A single annual policy does not fit all of them. On-demand non-owned aircraft insurance does.
What on-demand means
SkyWatch is one of the few carriers that offers non-owned aircraft insurance by the day, the week, the month or the year. The pilot picks the period that matches the flying they will actually do, and the policy starts from there. There is no need to pay for twelve months of coverage to fly for one training block.
How each term fits your customers
- Daily: checkrides, one-off rentals, visiting pilots, and students who want a policy in place for a solo day.
- Weekly: accelerated courses, instrument or commercial training blocks, and cross-country trips.
- Monthly: students and CFIs who fly regularly but are not ready to commit to a full year.
- Annual: instructors and frequent renters who fly most weeks and want one policy for the full year.
Why it matters for flight school owners
Most flight schools require renters and students to carry their own non-owned coverage before they fly school aircraft. When the only option is an expensive annual policy, some students delay buying it, fly less or look for coverage that does not meet your requirements. Flexible terms remove that barrier. Students can start training sooner, and your office gets a policy that matches your minimums.
Limits that scale with the need
SkyWatch non-owned coverage is built around three main parts:
- Liability for damage to the non-owned aircraft (hull): from $5K up to $200K on monthly and annual policies. Short-term plans have a maximum hull limit of $75K.
- Liability insurance: from $250K per accident and $25K per passenger, up to $1M per accident and $200K per passenger.
- Medical expense: up to $10K.
Short-term plans are a good fit for lower-value trainers. If your fleet includes aircraft worth more than the $75K short-term hull maximum, a monthly or annual policy is the route for those pilots.
Built for flight school workflows
SkyWatch can customize a flight school portal to match your minimum thresholds, so pilots only see options that meet your requirements. Your school offices can also be added as cc on every certificate of insurance (COI), so the paperwork reaches you without chasing students.
Quick checklist: choosing the right term
- How many hours will the pilot fly in the next 30 days?
- Does the pilot fly one aircraft or several?
- What hull value do your aircraft need? Short-term plans cap at $75K.
- Does your school require specific liability or hull minimums?
- Do you want your office copied on the COI?
