A pilot can hold a valid non-owned policy and still be uncovered for the flight they are about to make. The reason is usually the type of use the policy was written for. Flight school owners should know the three categories and the exclusions that sit around them.

Pleasure & Business (P&B)

P&B is the standard personal-flying category. It is aimed at pilots flying for personal use or to travel for their own business. It is not designed for flying for hire.

Commercial

Commercial policies are written for flying where the pilot is paid or the aircraft is used to carry out a commercial operation. If a pilot is flying for compensation, a P&B policy may not respond the way the pilot expects.

Instruction & Rental (I&R)

I&R is the category that matches flight school use: receiving instruction, giving instruction and renting aircraft. For students, CFIs and school renters, this is the category to look for first.

Choosing the wrong category can leave the pilot and the school exposed. Reading the policy before the first lesson is cheaper than finding out later.

Exclusions: what to review

Every aviation policy has exclusions. When you review one, look for:

  • The permitted use of the aircraft, and any flying outside it
  • Pilot requirements, such as certificate, medical or flight review status
  • Aircraft or operations that are named as not covered
  • Geographic or flight-type limits

Wording varies by policy, so always read the exact policy documents rather than relying on a summary.

Checklist for flight school owners

  • Confirm which category each of your pilots needs: students, CFIs and renters.
  • Write the required category into your school's insurance requirements.
  • Ask for a COI on every policy, with your offices copied.
  • Use a SkyWatch custom portal so pilots only see options that meet your minimums.
